doyle sam

(1906 until 1985, USA)

Sam Doyle was born on Saint Helena Island, South Carolina; he was the eighth of nine children in a Gullah family (African Americans with their own Creole language). After his retirement, Doyle dedicated himself to painting. He used exterior paint on large wooden boards and corrugated roofing iron and utilized any materials he could find on his island. He frequently placed shapeless figures before monochrome backgrounds; his inscriptions add vibrancy to his pictures.
