rädler josef karl

(1844 - 1917)

Josef Karl Rädler was born in 1844 in Bohemia, Czech Republic, and died in 1917. Around 1897, the former porcelain painter began to work with watercolours and tempera as well as coloured inks and Indian inks on paper. His paintings – about 400 in number, which were accidentally rescued from the garbage half a century after his death – are mostly painted on the front and back. Typical for Rädler is the combination of figural painting on the front of the page and ornamental text pictures on the back. His works can be found in many public and private collections and museums around the world such as the Wellcome Collection, England, the Museum of Everything, England, and the Wien Museum, Austria.
